All lights on my cable modem indicate that I am connected to the internet but I cannot launch my browser, or Outlook Express, successfully. I think I have picked up a computer virus but cannot even download the latest virus signatures since I cannot connect. Has anyone else here experienced this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you give me some more information and I will be able to help you.

US/UK/Europe or Asia?
What connectivity does your modem have?
Is it a modem, with inbuilt router?
Is it connected to your PC\a router\switch\hub?
Is it connected via network\USB?
I take it you are using Windows XP Sp2, can you confirm?
Is it deffinately Cable, or is it ADSL\DSL?
When you say "I cannot launch my browser sucessfully", what exactly do you mean, what error message is there?

Get back to me and I'll see what I can come up with?

Hope this Helps.

Thanks Neil,

The PC grinds and crunches along just to open up the browser and just times out. Usually the pc does not have to work so hard, which is why I think I may have a pc virus.

-Canada
-Surf board cable modem (Motorolla SB5100)
-Connected to pc
-Windows XP
-Definitely cable modem

Thanks.

I take it you have installed the modem as dirrected? Are you using USB, or network cable?

Hope this Helps.

Yes, as directed. It's been working fine for years up til a week ago...

I'm using a network cable. Thanks.

is your connected light on static, or flashing

Hope this Helps.

I am not at home at the moment so cannot verify for certain, but I believe it is static.

Thanks.

its its networked, then the modem should have an IP address. Is your machines address static, or does it have DHCP enabled recieving address from the modem\router?

I take it you have tried taking removing it, uninstalling, then re-installing the modem. It seems like you have two problems, it is very unlikely that this action is being caused by a virus, even though it is possible. You can download virus definitions onto a portable media, and update from there, and run a scan.

However, I suggest, uninstalling modem, and reinstalling.

Hope this Helps.

Thanks Neil,

Odd indeed. doing a RUN/MSCONFIG, I noticed 2 services that were starting up that I did not recognize before (I'll have to check what they were so I can post here). I removed the registry entries, reset the modem, and now my pc is almost back to normal (still a little bit slower than before).

Maybe this slowness caused some sort of timeout to happen whenever I pulled up the browser?

I would recommend downloading the latest virus sigs, uninstalling modem, reboot, into safe mode, run spyware/adware programs, reboot into normal windows, run virus scanner, clean, install modem, goto Microsoft.com/updates and run the online update scanner.

Hope this Helps.
