What are the cable distance limits for connecting an Analog or Digital station to an IPE shelf over copper? I thought it was around 2500 feet but not sure.

It's measured in loop resistance if I remember right, so heavier cable = longer distance. Can go so far as 4000 feet I think.

The books say 3000' loop. But I have heard of people going farther than that.

Digital is 3000' and is more sensitive since it is transporting a digital loop signal.

Analog is simply a measurement of electrical and can be run for miles and miles.

I have run analog over 5 miles with no problems. As long as you can maintain the voltages, you are cool with analog.

miles and miles would imply a loaded cable.. past 5000 ft without a load coil your pushing it.. nortel does make ops cards to push an analog out to 10K.. if your leasing pair from the local provider then you can send analog dt to china.. old school repeaters on h88 balanced and loaded cable..

digital is another problem.. not distance as much as it is a factor of time.. the sig has to reach the set and the set has to respond to the switch within one pulse of the time clock.. so typical for 64 kilobit is around 2500.. that can change with less connections or larger copper..

best bet if your talking distance greater then that would be a remote shelf

Analog is loop distance must be within 1000 ohms at nominal –48 V (excluding telephone)

If youhave that, you are solid. Wire guage, bridge taps, building protection, etc. all affect the ohms on the line.

I used to work at a ski area and we had tons of analog across 3 mountains with our farthest points close to the 5 mile mark. Point to point dry pairs with no conditioning and regular NT8D09 cards.

Then clearly, temperature is a factor too? :)
