Hi,

I have a 2-year-old Linksys cable/dsl router exhibiting odd behavior. I made no changes. I just woke up one morning and it started doing this:

- when I run ipconfig, my PC shows an IP address assigned by my DSL provider, rather than the usual 192.168.x.x address I assigned it via the router
- when I hit the reset button, nothing happens
- when I power it off/on, it takes about 2 minutes before the lights come back on
- when I try to hit the admin page via 192.168.1.1, the web browser says it can't find the page

The lights are otherwise blinking as normal. I can still connect to the internet through the router, as though my PC is connected directly to the DSL port. Is my router fried?

It's possibly but I wouldn't buy flowers just yet. It would seem as though you are being issued the IP address directly rather than the router as might be the norm, like you say.

Have you tried a factory reset of the router yet? I am not aware of the procedure for your router but usually it either involves holding down the reset button for 10-20 seconds, or turning it off, holding the reset button and turning it on.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

I tried the reset button, but the reset doesn't happen. Somehow, the software in the old router got corrupted and acts like it no longer exists. The router acts like a hub now.

I ended up buying a new router, and all is fine. I guess everything breaks eventually.

Unfortunately this is true. I suppose as a silver lining this can sometimes allow us to upgrade to newer technologies.
