It says this is an L3 switch---will it function the same as, say, a 3560, as far as routing vlans, acls, etc?

Burt

I don't see why not.
The Cisco Catalyst 2948G-L3 and 4908G-L3 are fixed-configuration Layer 3 Ethernet switches featuring wire-speed switching for IP, Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX), and IP Multicast. The switches support all the routing protocols used in mid-sized networks. They support additional protocols for scalable, reliable networks and features such as quality of service (QoS), security, CiscoWorks2000, and EtherChannel® technology.
The recommended upgrades according to Cisco are 3550's, 4503's, and 6503's (mind you the EOL for this bad boy was waaay back in 2003).

Not sure if it helps or not :)

I hate all Uppercase... I don't want my groups to seem angry at me all the time! =)

I know---also have a 2948G, but not sure if it's L3...they are both CatOS, which is always fun to play with. I have a few ports etherchanneled to a Compaq DL380 G3 with the gig nics teamed. I should be getting 2GBps through, but not...they only come in as 100...I haven't really looked at it much, but the etherchannel is simple...

set etherchannel 1/3- 1/4

something like that. It's in the Gig module on the 2948. Guess I'll try and create vlans and route them then.,..

Burt

2948G is layer 2 only catos code switch. It runs Catalyst 4000 code base. I would check the port speeds on the 2948G , think they are only 10/100 ports and they have a couple of gig uplinks if you have gbics in them . So your etherchannels will be however many 100 meg ports you tie together.

Crap---you're right. Is there a L3 version? What I have is a C2948G-A. The other switch is actually a 1000BaseFx, a 4912G...

Burt

2948G-A is a layer 2 device . There is a 2948G-L3 version but the "A" is a layer 2 device.

The Catalyst 2980G-A features:

•Dedicated 80-port, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet and two-port, 1000BaseX Gigabit Ethernet with flexible media interfaces

•Feature-rich enterprise Catalyst system software with advanced Cisco IOS® network services

•Comprehensive management tools based on standard CiscoWorks2000 applications

•24 Gbps non-blocking switch fabric

•18 million packets-per-second forwarding rate

•EtherChannel®, UplinkFast, PortFast and other fault-tolerant features

•Redundant Power System (RPS) Support
Desktop Connection Protection: Catalyst 2980G-A
Dedicated 80-Port 10/100 for the Wiring Closet

The Catalyst 2980G-A is a fixed-configuration, Layer 2 Ethernet switch with 80 RJ-45 10/100 ports and two-Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports with modular GBIC interfaces. The full functionality and connectivity in a compact package eliminates the need for extra modules, cabling, or configuration in many small- to medium-sized enterprise wiring closets.

I meant the 2980, not 2948---I have "48" stuck in my head---have to replace a WS-x6348-RJ-45 in a 6513 tonight...

Burt

The same issue with the 2980 , its just a 2948G with more ports , layer 2 only...
