I recently used that folder and the following procedure to save my bacon when I was editing the registry and accidentally deleted the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ registry entry (yes I know - real smart). The laptop wouldn't boot to the desktop.
But anyway, putting the original SYSTEM file back from the C:\windows\repair folder got me going again. All I had to do was install all my missing drivers and the computer was just like it was (as far as I can tell so far).
Anyway, here's my question. I looked at my desktop and the dates on the registry files in that folder were all from today's date. I thought the point of that folder was that you could pull the file from that folder from the ORIGINAL INSTALLATION date. It sure was OLD on my laptop, as desired, but not on my desktop.
Any ideas why the files would be more current on my desktop?? It kind of blows the purpose of using it as a way-back machine.
