C# - is it worth the bother??

Hi,
To those who have dabbled in C#.
Do any of you consider it a step forward for programming
in general and therfore worth learning,
or simply a step sideways (i.e a marketing gimmick)??

As far as C# in and of itself, and not in reference to the .Net platform as a whole, I just think its an easy language to use, bringing together the best parts I knew from Java with the ease of VB (i.e., properties of objects).
