C API related questions: 1) directory list 2) regular expressions

Hi All,

I beg you pardon for asking the questions which more likely
belong to a 'Unix C' forum, but I did not find the one
under Tek-Tips umbrella.

So my questions are:

1) Is there any function/procedure,
which I could call from C (undex Linux / Unix )
that would return a list of files in a specified directory ?

2) Are there any tools to match strings using regular
expressions (something like what's available in Perl) ?
