I'm just curious, but does anyone know how much it costs to actually purchase an IP address (or range of them) from ICANN? I've Googled around, but can't seem to find anything.

As a *very* ball-park figure. We bought a ~4000 addresses from RIPE about 18 months ago. The cost was approx 3000 pounds ($5500 USD).

I assume the costs would not be too different in the US from Europe.

Thanks. I've got a ways to go before I get to that point, sadly...

Make sure you have explored all you can from:

. a static IP issued from your ISP. This is completely ISP dependent, but the cost is usually modest if all you need is one or two IPs;

. DDNS services. These are often free. This allows you to use dynamic IPs and still register an address with DNS servers. Google this as there are several options.

I'm doing dynamic DNS currenlty. I was just wondering how much it actually costs to get an IP. It seems kind of nice to just buy it once and be independent then. Although I suppose you'd still have to pay for a connection to the backbone.

Well, your ISP would likely be the cheapest route.

IPv4 IP addresses are getting rare enough to be sold now on e-Bay.
