so little groundwork, we are a large firm, 6 locations 35 -50 users each.

have met with hosted providers and multiple premise base pbx vendors

i was originally against hosted but as i have done my research and we have gone through these meetings they now appear to be the frontrunners.

any input from you guys is appreciated.

Why not host your own?

You could have benefits of both.

Server edition located in a data centre, SIP trunks, VPN connectivity to the DC, and IP handsets. VPN remote phones for remote workers!

Hosted and controlled by you :)

The natural progression after this would be enterprise switches like Aura (formally known as ACM)

there are plenty of threads here within the last couple of months with the same topic, do a search on it, that will save us all to harp about the solution we don't like again, LOL

Give a tech a solution and he will be back tomorrow to ask you the next question, teach a tech how to read the manual and he will be able to solve the problems for a life time.

@hairless - because I do not have to buy the backend and I do not have space in a data center.. The cost of the monthly they quoted me on is about $500 less per month then what we are paying currently, they also showed me the user interface and I am able to handle all changes myself. I can even add a sip extension if I want to (although the rep said they will do this for me included)

@westi - I looked through those it seems like many parts were deleted and I could not get a good idea of the pros/cons

If this were my decision, I would purchase 6 systems and network them together. With 35-50 people per site, I think this will provide the best solution. If it was 35 sites with 6 people per site, I would go hosted, but with the large concentrations as described, this would be my suggestion.

My experience is that people who try a hosted solution with a large number of employees at a single site, ultimately end up installing a system after about a year, breaking their contracts with the hosted provider.

Modern systems have easy to use interfaces. Basic system administration should be a part of any installation. This should allow you to make changes yourself.

Having your own equipment gives you the flexibility of multiple providers and failovers not available with a hosted solution. If voice communication is not essential to your business, then maybe a hosted solution will suffice.

busster-

who told you this? i raised this question to the hosted provider and they brought us to 3 customers of theres each with 150+ phones that like what they have. He explained to me better qos and having routers and vlans and that stuff.

i raised this as a possible solution but we would also have to pay thousands every month for site to site mpls connections, a cost we do not have with hosted.

and like i said above they do have a user portal that i can make all admin changes myself.

They also have their pbxs in 2 different data centers that failover to each other in an emergency

What a load of c**p.

You must be a new salesman for some hosted "entrepreneurs" - get lost.

Crum?

I actually like having a premise system. The problem is that takes away from my budget for other things.

Why blow it on something I can get for free?

I appreciate your input though. Definitely moving me towards dealing with a contractor like you (lol)

I think the multi site option would be good. IP Office in a well planned SCN will give you lots of benefits over hosted. The capital outlay is going to be the killer, however in the long run, the TCO would work out the same as hosted in my experience. I can say we have taken over a number of hosted situations with a premise situated box, but cant say I have had any customers who have opted for hosted and taken out their IP Office.

You want to project long term costs over capital expense. If the hosted provider goes bust, where does that leave you?

Hairless-

What benefits can the avaya networking give me hosted cannot?

The biggest issue I have with this is not only do I have to buy 6 phone systems, but the mpls connections are going to cost $700 per site. That's 4200 per month plus another $700 for the centralized pri we were quoted. That's 5000 a month on top of the cost of all the systems.

The hosted system came in around $3000 per month for everything. And was less then half the cost up front.

I need to be able to justify paying more than double for something

And that monthly includes hardware replacement and maintenance.. The distributors we spoke to wanted anywhere from 3 to 5
Hundred a month more for that

what sort of connections are you planning to use for your hosted?

You wouldnt need MPLS, a decent managed meshed VPN will do, as the traffic is fairly light between sites.

Both ways can be recommended.
I advice our customers, if the will own their system and have the free choise to chooe the ISDN or SIP provider, then choose that you own the PBX system.
If you want the hosted solution, this it is more difficult to have a choice of CO provider (this choice does not exist), but you do not need to care for power and space at your own premises, since all equipment is placed elsewhere - in a hosting centre.

With 6 locations 35 -50 users each - a hosted solution would be best and cheapest.
