Hi Guys... i saw a 6500 switch on a local refurbished market and would like to ask if you could help me some pointers on what to check on this equipment, besides the physical check. I'm really excited to buy because its really, cheap, the owner of the shop doesnt seem to know what it is.

Please give some pointers.

As long as it isn't hacked up and you can console into the supervisor and watch it boot up and see that it doesn't have any errors while booting it should be ok . 6500's are not cheap so if its really cheap either there is something wrong with it or its not legally owned if you know what I mean .

Im not so worry about legal or stolen, because this is highly prohibited by this country. Im sure tracking down this equipment is a breeze for the government on the reseller.

Anyhow, im a little worried if the system reboots itself on and on, something like a bug on the hardware backplane then it keeps on reboot. Not so sure how to check defects "internally

When you power it on all the cards go thru a self test and you will be able to see if the 6500 detects any errors or not . Once booted up you can look at the cards with a show module command and it will tell if all the cards look ok or they come up as faulty . That's really all your can check. Make sure both power supplies work ok also.

I got the WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE, Supervisor 2 (6506 Catalyst), can anyone suggest what to load for begineers?

Is this just a layer 2 switch or does it have a msfc installed on the supervisor too . What did it come with ???

Ummm.... 2 Power supply, 1 FAN try, 1 48 switch port, and 2 WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE, Supervisor 2. Its a good buy though, but dont have any idea if i can load it with IOS or CatOS.

I tried pulling out the sup engine and the memory is 128MB which is the standard deployment according to cisco website.

It also comes with a 24MB PCMCIA PC memory card. Do i need to use a 64MB memory card to load the IOS?

If it doesn't have a msfc card attached to the supervisor then its catos only for that switch.

THe MSFC Card is a daughter card right? Actually there are some cards on the sup2 not so sure what it is. There are 2 daughter card in it, but not so sure where to look the names. You can view the pic of my module bellow:

i have 2 24MB PCMCIA card, can i use this to install the IOS or CATOS?

Just do a show module and it will tell you if it has a msfc installed or not.
