I just noticed that HP seems to be phasing out the 4200 and 4300 models and introducing the 4250 and 4350 models. What are some of the differences?

First, the new -50 models have USB 2.0 and they share the same new toner cartridge! It seems the premium 4350 models come only as a JetDirect "n" versions, so don't expect to get them without JetDirect cards installed, at least for now.

Here are some differences:

Model/ppm/CPUspeed/RAM/toner/PagesPerCart/PagesPerMonth

Old:
4200: 35ppm 300MHz 48MB 38A 12,000p 150,000/month
4300: 45ppm 350MHz 80MB 39A 18,000p 200,000/month

New:
4250: 45ppm 460MHz 48MB 42A 10,000p 200,000/month
4350: 55ppm 460MHz 80MB 42A 10,000p 250,000/month

The 42X cartridge can be used in place of the 42A and is rated for 20,000 pages, double the pages costing only 50% more.

Approximate prices USD:

4250 $ 900
4250n $1250
4350n $1650

If you decide to get the older 4200 series or 4300 series it would probably be smart to get a model without the JetDirect card included and pay about $400 less. The 4200n and 4300n come with the 615n JetDirect model J6057A which HP no longer sells. Many web sites sell the 615n for $200 to $250 USD. If you want the newer 620n model J7934A it sells for about $350 USD. Whichever one you buy, you could come out saving money or getting a newer model.

615n: 2MB flash and 4.5MBps throughput
620n: 4MB flash and 6.0MBps throughput
