button rollover effect not working

Hi - I'm still a flash neophyte.

I'm trying to create a button that has different images for up, over, down, and hit.

So I created 4 different buttons for each event.

I put the up image on the stage. I right clicked it and chose edit - i placed the corresponding over, down, and hit images in their respective slots.

I returned to editing the movie. It seems to work fine until I go to control>test movie. when testing the movie nothing at all happens on any of the events.

I've got "enable simple buttons" checked. - what am I doing wrong?

Did you place buttons inside a button? That would definitely create problems.

yes I did - at the end of a frustrating day yesterday, right before I went home, it popped into my head that maybe that was a mistake.

So then I thinking I should create 3 different "graphic" symbols for up, over and down, and then incorporate these 3 symbols into a separately created button. Is my thinking right on this?
