I'm a computer guy but I'm starting to have to do more and more telephone work around my company. It's gotten to the point where I think it would be handy to have a butt-set around instead of carrying an old phone in my bag. My problem is that I'm not quite sure which one is right for me or which ones are of good quality. Most of the phone guys I've dealt with in the past have used some form of Harris Labs tester so I'm kinda leaning towards that brand.

We've got a mix of analog, digital (ESI IVX 72eII phone system), and DSL lines (ADSL and ReachDSL that also provide analog signals for our fax machines).

The Harris TS25D looks like it would work out. Does anyone have any other brand or model recommendations?

I also vote Harris.
I am a believer of "you get what you pay for," and Harris does it right. I have a few TS22's, and a ts22L.

If I was going to buy a new one it would probably be a TS42.

ts 25d is a nice product I carry one along with the ts22 one thing I really don't like about the 25d is when the battery goes you have no functionality with the 22 when the battery goes you lose speaker but you still fave a functional buttset

ran into a issue the other day where I couldnt use the 25 with groundstart lines , so I had to use the 22 .

If I could only have one it wouldnt be the 25d

do you have a lows in your area, they sell a decent buttset, punch down tone and probe. all of which your about to use

Thanks for the replies.

That sucks about the TS25D needing batteries to have any kind of functionality.

The TS42DLX looks interesting. Maybe someone can clear this up for me: does the DSL/POTS filtering ability mean that I can attach my leads to the DSL connections on the punch block and make a voice call without disrupting the data flow?

I am still happy with my TS21s. Got my first one in 1980. Recently, I misplaced the set at a customers premise and thought it got rippedoff. So then I looked on Ebay and found a replacement in excellent shape and won the bid for $30.00. Two months later my original showed up. My customer found the set in one of their showrooms. So now I have three!

FYI, Harris sold the division that makes testsets, the Network Products Divison, to Fluke in 2003! Shortly after they discontinued the TS21. They no longer make that model! If you need service talk directly with the folks in the Camarrillo, CA location. They are the only ones that seem to know anything about the product. Fluke may make good meters, but the corp in Everett, WA provided NO support when I called to inquire about some replacement parts for the TS21. In fact they never called me back. They acted as if Camarillo did not exist anymore. But they still do.

I've found the answer to my last question now that I've found the new "official" website for the Harris products:
DSL/POTS filtering technology will allow the technician to safely draw dial tone on a live DSL/POTS shared line to test the POTS service while protecting the DSL from downing or disruption.

Fluke must be trying to let that brand name die off since they sure don't promote it very well.
