I am new to the VOIP seen. I have setup a 2.7 asterisk box with 1 VOIP line. My question is if someone calls the VOIP line does asterisk take the call over and free up the line, or is the line busy until the caller hangs up? Thanks for all the help

Usually VoIP carriers allow for 2 or more calls on their account. Since the VoIP line isn't a physiscal piece of equipment you should only be limited by your carrier, bandwidth and system set up. If you are talking about a regular POTS line connected through an FXO card then you can only make or accept one call at a time since that is essentially like using a regular telephone one call at a time.
