Hi all, I've just moved into a house of students where the landlord has setup a network for all of us. In the past (in other appartments) i've done alot of remote assistance and now i can't seem to get thru the router. I've forwarded the necessary ports yet I'm not able to either remote them or even commence audio conversations with them via msn. There's a 4 port d-link router leading to a 10 port hub in the basement where we all come out of. I'm also not able to have my users connect to my ftp for the same reason and I'm only able to connect to an ftp in passive mode. Is it possible that I can send and receive files via icq, msn, etc... but not able to configure the router to do remotes? Any help would be greatly appreciated

You are behind a NAT router. When you say you forwarded all the ports, did you take into consideration that your NAT IP is going to change every time you connect? Did you forward the ports on the router?

Set your computer to use a static IP in the router address range, and place yourself (through router setup) in its DMZ zone.

thx very much for your suggestion. I'm generally always online and have the same ip addy but whenever I do have to reconnect I'm always sure to check my ip in the router and adjust accordingly. I'm assuming you mean the 192.168.1.? in the dmz host which I have opened up to no avail as well as forwarding the necessary ports in the same manner. Is it possible that the landlord has locked it somehow to only allow for certain things? Thx again

If you are on the defined DMZ IP, and it still does not work for messenger, make sure all the ports that are required have forwarding entries. It should not be necessary in the DMZ, but voice requires TCP and UDP port 6901 to be forwarded.

If still no joy, consider using enat:

FTP is not NAT friendly. You need to consider the issue of ports, and the issue of your MTU setting. The following articles refer to Linksys routers, but the principle is identical for your DLink:

You have to make sure that the Remote Management and Block anonymous WAN Request of the router are enabled...after that, try to access the setup of the router by this format

Thank you both for your help, I do have audio working now thx to the ENat program and it's too late at night to try to remote someone but I'll let you know how it plays out. Again, thank you both very much.
