Burning DVD-R disk. 'No Disk In Drive'

Hi,
I am encountering a strange problem with burning dvd-r disks (using Nero). My PC, with I got last year has a dual-format writer. I’ve had on-going problems with dvd+r disks in that I have not been getting the speeds I expected; writing as 4x or even 2x instead of the 8x that I should be getting (and sometimes do get). So when I needed new blank disks, I decided to try dvd-r.

When I tried writing the first disk, it worked although only at 2x. However when I tried another disk a couple of days later the system reported that there wasn’t a disk in the drive. I tried a different disk, and then another, but with every one I tried Nero reported that there was no disk in the drive. (I must have tried as many as 20).

I cannot see that this is a hardware issue; what are the chances that of all the disks that I bought only one works and that is the one that I randomly chose to write to first?
Does anyone have any idea of what the problem could be?

Any help appreciated,
Thanks.

John,

There is really no chance all those DVD's were corrupted. Go into device manager and check the status of your DVD to make sure there are driver errors. They are usually plug and play but you never know. Also, if you go to play a DVD movie in there, does it work? Can you play audio CD's? Give us an update on that when you get a chance. A simple possible solution will be to grab another DVD-RW Drive at a local store and see if it works, if not then you can return it and at least we know it's not a hardware issue. Hope this helps.

Has the drive manufacturer released any more recent "firmware" updates for this drive?

Uninstalling the drive in Device Manager, rebooting, allowing Windows to rediscover it may help?
