I kept getting the following error when draging files to the DVD+RW drive to be burned.

Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do?

Option are: Retry and Cancel

I have burned data successfuly before so it's not like it has never worked. I also tried using Nero to burn but unsuccessful so I'm guessing it is something else. I looked in the event log and there isn't any event that relates to this problem that's being recorded. So I'm not sure what's going on. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for the response. I have tried those two links and unfortunately none of those discussions solved the problem. Those discussions have the exact error and problem as I am but none of them solve the problem I have.

Is this the same DVD-RW disc that you've drag & dropped to in the past? If not, make sure it's formatted for UDF packet-writing.

I believed that the media doesn't have to be formated. In the past as with every Windows xp Pro machine, you can drag and drop files into a DVD+RW or CD+RW drive even if there is no media in the drive. So I don't think it has to do with the media, files, and or folders. It is something else.

ljCharlie,

I believe we have just found your problem. First of all, every single CD-RW or DVD+/-RW must be formatted prior to dragging & dropping (also known as UDF packet-writing). If you want instructions and verification of that, right-click your burner and go to the DLA tab. Click the link at the bottom-left to view more information. The guide that comes up will talk about formatting your disc.

If you use Windows XP for drag & drop, it stores an image of what it's going to burn first before it actually writes to the media. Make sure there's enough space left on the drive that's storing the image. You can set the destination under the Recording tab in the burner's properties.

However, you could have a compound issue here. For CD/DVD drag & drop to work in Windows XP, you must make sure Nero's InCD is disabled or turned off. Perhaps along the way, you've enabled it to run down in your system tray in the lower-right.

I'll give that a try. However, if by drag&drop the file to the DVD+RW drive means Windows XP is storing the image of that file, then why is drag&drop worked before? I don't have Nero InCD runing in the system tray either. Why is Windows XP storing the image anymore then?

OK, back up a sec...

First of all, disregard what I said about DLA. That only applies to my HP burner which came with that software.

XP does not support drag & drop to a DVD+/-RW. It only supports CD writable media. So there's why the drag & drop isn't working like it used to. It was seamless to you before when you used a CD, because I think XP formats the disc for you before it writes to the CD for the first time. You don't have to format it yourself. This link explains a lot of the basics in more detail:

However, you will need to use Nero to format a DVD for this option. I don't think InCD supports DVD's either, so I'm not sure how you'll do it. But perhaps you can accomplish it manually using Nero's Burning ROM utility. Might want to search on Nero's site for a tutorial.

Good Luck!

Most if not all CD's are sold and purchased pre formatted and can be written to by XP's burning software without any further action. Many Direct CD type of software would require the CD to be formatted correctly for packet writing but some of these programs do have the ability to format "as you go" in order to save you time.

Does this DVD writer have the ability to write both CD's and DVD's? If so XP should be able to write to a CD in the drive.

Can you drag and drop other files not involved in CD burning?

Is it just the same one file or folder that you can't drag and drop or copy?

It doesn't matter what file(s) or folder(s) I drag in, it just won't let me drop the file(s) or folder(s) in the drive even if it's not involve burning. This DVD+RW does write both dvd and cd.

If I take the blank media out of the DVD+RW drive then Windows display it as DVD+RW Drive (E:) but as soon as I put a blank media into the drive then Windows displays it as DVD Drive (E:) in the Windows Explorer. I'm not sure why Windows would change the lable on this DVD+RW drive when I put in blank CD or DVD in the drive.

And yes, if I put a DVD or CD in the drive, Windows is able to read files/copy/and execute files off of the DVD or CD.

Are you able to place the files in this location - C:\Documents and Settings\Usernamexxxx\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning?

As to the naming of the drive, XP is (I think) merely reflecting the type of media you have inserted into the drive. In the case you have mentioned it is informing you that you have a DVD inserted (not a CD as is required if XP is going to write anything). If you place a blank CD it will probably change the name to "CD Drive (E)" or if the CD has been given a Volume Label it would change the name to that.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Drag and Drop.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Thanks! I will try to drop files in that folder and see if I am able to. As far as restoring, I don't think it will work. As I might have mentioned before, I have restored some of my earlier Symantec Ghost images and still not working.

Am I missing something here? XP's built-in support for burning doesn't support DVD writing (at least not that I've seen which is sustained by the link I posted in my last post).

If that's the case, you must resort to Nero for that. Even then, it would seem that InCD only supports CD's (hence the name "CD").

ljCharlie,
Do us a favor and just try to make a quick data DVD using Nero and see if it works. If so, then the burner itself is not the issue...

Well, I have to admit, cdogg is correct. I put one CD-R media and indeed I was able to drag&drop files into the drive. And then pop in the DVD+R media back in the drive and yes indeed, I can drag&drop files in. So, right now I'm trying to burn data using Nero again to see if it works. I did try burning a movie with Nero and it's not working so this time I'm going to try burning just data and see what happens.

Well, I take it back. Cdogg, is not entirely correct. I did put in a DVD+RW into the drive. Use Nero to erase the DVD+RW. After that, I was able to drag&drop files into the drive just fine. So I don't know what's going. I'm burning the data now. I'll see what the result is.

ljCharlie

Okay, another thing I found out is that I can't drag&drop in winedows xp if the media in the drive is a DVD+R. If the drive is empty, CD-R, or DVD+RW then I can drag&drop. I successfuly burned a DVD+RW and in the process of burning a DVD+R media using Nero.
