Why is it that the bullets in my documents don't print out right. They appear as an n or a funny box or something even though they look fine on the screen. Also, when I make a .pdf maybe half of them look the same. I need help-this is so frustrating. I keep redoing them over and over.

Hi, joanmp,

Which version of PM are you using, which platform and OS version?
Which font and character are you using for your bullet?
Are you creating them using the Bullet and numbering plug-in?

I am using PageMaker 6.5. I bring my documents in from Microsoft Word and then I usually have to use the Plugin for bullets because they get messed up if I copy over fonts or change them. I am using Microsoft 2000 NT OS.

Hi, joanamp,

How? As a *.DOC file using the PM import filter?

Some guidance on importing text from MSWord into PM:

"It is well known that copy/pasting Word docs directly into PM will cause problems, particularly when style names clash. There are several 'safe' ways of getting the text into PM to ensure you don't bring in conflicting styles with the potential to corrupt the PM docs:

"1. Save the text from Word as rich text format (.RTF) or plain text (.TXT) instead of as a .DOC, then use File>Place to get it into PM. Make sure you immediately delete the link to the Word doc in the Links Manager, otherwise problems next time you open the PM file as it will look for that RTF/TXT file - bad news if you have made changes to the text in PM.

"Saving in RTF or TXT formats strips out the Word styles. The former however retains all bolding and italicising, the latter does not.

"2. Copy and paste the text into a brand new PM doc, highlight all the text and on the Styles palette, click on the [No Style] option. Then recopy the text and paste it into your existing PM doc and apply PMs styles. (Don't save the PM doc where you applied the [No Styles]).

"Either way, it is far better to apply styles using PM than to bring in Word styles.

"3. When you are in the "Place" dialog box, try checking "read tags." This will prevent the Word document from importing its own styles into your document. "

Hope this helps.

>>They appear as an n or a funny box or something<<

This happens when you change the font in the text of the bulleted list. Say for example you are using Arial for the bullet text, but are using a character from the Symbols font for the bullets themselves. If you change the font in the bulleted points (by highlighting all the text) then the bullets will also change to the new font. And most likely end up with a 'n' or a 'funny box' instead of a bullet.

The solution is, if you want to change the font in the bulleted points, first select it all, and delete the bullets (Plug-Ins>Bullets and Numbering>Remove bullets). Do your font change, rehighlight the text to be bulleted and then reapply the bullet style you have chosen.

Hi, Lyn,
