I'm totally new to SharePoint and am setting it up on Small Business Server 2003. I've got it set up, and now I'd like to make a couple of hundred documents available via the SharePoint interface. What's the best way to do this without "uploading" each one individually?

All the documents that I need to make available are already local to the Sharepoint server.

Thanks,

ShackDaddy

first solution:
you could put a share on your docs folder and use the pageviewer web part to make em available on your wss site

add web part : pageviewer webpart and use \\server\share to have your docs popped up in the wss site

no need to upload then

second solution:
using a client that has office 2003 installed you can upload multiple files

browse to your doc lib from that client, select upload files, select upload multiple files, voila

third solution
on a client that has office 2003 installed you could use a "mapping" directly to your doc lib

You need to make a web connection first...
Go into Network Places
Add new network connection
Choose another network location
enter the full http:// string to your doc lib
Name it

The go in and map drive to \\server\site\doclib

i think this only works from an XP client but i'm not that sure

hope this helps ShackDaddy

yup....

or you can just go into Network places and open network connection to your document library and just drag and drop your files. The downside to this is that Sharepoint will not know who uploaded the files. (If you have an "alert me", it will send a message as modified by "unknown")

Thanks, guys. I'm getting the outlines of this, although I don't know what many of the terms you are using mean. Happily, they are google fodder and I'll know much more in an hour than I do now.

TechMC, how do you identify the document library in Network Places? There doesn't seem to be a default document library shared out. Where is the document library actually stored on SBS? Is it a folder, or is it a database?

Thanks,

ShackDaddy

Do you have XP client? Once you uploaded a document it shouldve created a share folder pointing to your document library in sharepoint.

If it isnt shared out, bart showed how to:
You need to make a web connection first...
Go into Network Places
Add new network connection
Choose another network location
enter the full http:// string to your doc lib
Name it

Another way you can do it, go to your document library. Click on an existing document you have uploaded already. Open and hit SAve as and when the box comes up where it shows you the locaion of where u want to save the file, click on "Tools" and "add to My places". This creates a share folder in Network places.

The documents are in the SQL database if you using one. Are u using SQl or MSDE? Let me find out more information for you.

I'm not sure whether the default SBS2003 SPS database is SQL or MSDE.

<quote shackdaddy>I'm not sure whether the default SBS2003 SPS database is SQL or MSDE</quote>

this is of no importance for the question you asked.

additional information:
main difference (there are other differences 2) between SQL and (W)MSDE (special version for sharepoint) is that with SQL Server you can enable full text indexing (comes with SQL) ant with WMSDE you can not.

if you happen to have SBS2003 standard version: no SQL 2000 is included
SBS 2003 enterprise has SQL 2000 included. But i think the default setup will install an msde besides SQL server, so you still need to migrate to the full SQL. (but i'm not sure about that)

anyway this post is rather useless for answering your question, but gives some more background info (comes in handy when you don't have the time or resources to dig that info up)
