I just took on a new project at a high school where there are over 1300 students. I would like to give each a AD account. Can anyone recommend any procedures or scripts or tools for doing so?

Also, if you anyone has any experience in education with this many students is it even a good idea to create individual accounts? I was just thinking of creating user account based on machine names which is a much lower number, 400 or so.

I am in the process of starting this myself as the previous personnel created broad generic accounts like student1, student2, user1, users2, etc... and many students shared the same login account. The problem with that of course is students sharing their work (separate accounts won't stop that, but I will not make it easier for them), and the biggest is Internet traffic monitoring. Can't pinpoint a student if I have 100 students all logging in as student1, so I'll be implementing this next school year, particulary for my high school and possible middle school students after I have them/their parents sign a computer use policy form.

If you can get a dump of a file with the names of all the students it's actually pretty easy to write a VB Script that will connect to the Active Directory Scripting Interface (ADSI, obvs.) and create the accounts automatically. The VB Script forum ought to have some pre-built tools in their FAQ for this.

Hopefully I will have access to the student information system and if that program is decent maybe it can export records into csv format.

I found a script online that looks pretty decent I'm going to test it out on my lab (aka home) domain to see if it works well.

I just know that one person managing 1400 accounts will drive me mad.
