Hi folks

Can you help please?

I am building new lpars on p570. I would like to take a gold backup of one lpar and apply that on new lpars that I am building so the the application and volume groups are identical.

1) I can do a mksysb and savevg for a volume group but I would like to backup all the volume groups and restore the same structure on the target lpar so that the Oracle application runs without being installed manually on the terget lpar.

2) Does anyone have any tips on how/if I can archive this?3) is it possible that when I restore the Oracle application volume group on the new lpar, I would not have to install Oracle on the new lpar and expect the installed version of the source to run on the target?
4) I have created the volume groups on the target lpar with the same sizes as the source

(I do not know enough about NIM to configure it to install and populate the new lpars so I am doing it manually. I am not building that many lpars so it`s not a great deal having to build the lpars manually. It`s just the process that I would like tips on.

Thanks a lot

I do this monthly when we rebuild our dev LPARs.

1. Restore the mksysb to the new LPAR .
2. Reconfigure AIX to your needs.
2. Restore data/application volume groups
3. Make changes to your applications so they do not interfere with the production instances.
4. Start your applications.

i've just been thru the same exercise as you are doing right now a month ago!!!

I used NIM for that

i installed NIM on one of the lpars and created one standard LPAR that i want the other to be identical to this one and the i took a NIM backup of that LPAR that pushed this image to the rest of the lpars

you can look into NIM installation guide. its straight forward

To get Oracle installed on your new lpar you will have to restore oracle from rman or however you back it up. if you aren't doing oracle then your dba's will be able to do this for you.

Thanks a lot guys. I will work with a DBA to follow through jstacey`s procedure and then go through the NIM guide for future work.

Thanks again for your time and help. Much appreciated.
