Anyone got any ideas of places to find out how to build a good object model?

Microsoft's Duwamish sample is a good place to start. It's multi-tier, web-based, uses COM+/MTS objects, etc. Another good thing is if you read along with their text, they'll tell you why they made certain decisions.
