build SQL query that defines initial data transfer

Depends on what you mean with 'initial'. Do you mean the very first time that you populated your datawarehouse with ANY data at all? That does not sound anything for SQL to handle. With DB2 you have the db2diag.log file that records this sort of things for a given instance.
Please state with which type of RDBMS you are working and define more closely what you want. I have a feeling you may want something else alltogether........ T. Blom
