Build Book - PM Crashes or Gives Error Message

When I try to build a book using the plugin, PM crashes. Here is what I've done to try to resolve it:

- Saved publication and all graphics in their own directory.
- Linked all graphics vs. embedding them.

I then received the following error message:

"the publication you are trying to impose has a path name |"

I think it may have something to do with several styles I am not using that are still present from the original PM template. I read that it possible to "remove all unused styles" but can't figure out how.

I also read that cutting and pasting text from other documents might cause a problem - vs. placing objects. I do have some text copied from another PM document and pasted. Would that be an issue? Never had a problem before copying and pasting.

The build booklet plugin worked perfectly on an original PM template.

Any help would be great!

Hi, scottdev,

> "remove all unused styles"

Windows -> Plug-in Palettes -> Scripts --> Text -> Styles - > Remove Unused.

> I do have some text copied from another PM document and pasted. Would that be an issue?

No - copying'n'pasting from one PM page/file to another is fine.

> "the publication you are trying to impose has a path name |"

If Build Booklet fails with the message 'Build Booklet Error', followed by 'The publication you are trying to impose has a path name', then:

1. make sure there are no spaces or commas in the path/filename;
2. use a simple local folder off C:\ e.g. c:\pmfiles ;
3. use the old DOS 8.3 filename format, e.g. booklet.pmd .

Some Success - But...

Followed your instructions. The Build Book plugin worked!

But, only the information on the cover page (pg1) appeared in the new document.

Only two shaded boxes on a seperate layer appeared on any of the pages 2-4.

Tried checkinig for problems with linked text. Have there been problems with linked text? If so, is there a way to fix that?

There's nothing on the master pages. Removed the "store copy in publication" option for all images. There is nothing locked that I can see.

Any thoughts?

Hi, Scottdev,

> Only two shaded boxes on a seperate layer appeared

Should they be text or images?

> problems with linked text?

I always make sure that any imported text is *unlinked*. This is so that if you amended the text in PM, the next time you open the file PM doesn;t set it all back as it was by reading the original.

Lyn has a few tips about the BB plug-in - she may be able to help but as she's in OZ she's about 10 hours ahead of us. G'day Lyn!

The shaded boxes were color filled frames. There was text on a diffrent layer. There were also other images on the page. Basically the only items that appeared in the document were the items on the first page - everything appeared fine there.

Linked Text: I didn't have any text that was linked to outside files, only text frames linked together within the document.

Hi, scottdev,

I understand. If you are using layers, you will have to merge them first.

Yep - might be ahead of you in time, but not as fast off the mark as you are. Undoubtably the layers are the problem. Also check that no elements (text boxes or graphics) overlap the page boundaries (e.g. bleeds, headings extending across a double page spead). These need to be cropped back to within page boundaries prior to BB and then they can be uncropped when the new impositioned document is completed. However, the error message being received is not consistent with this being the problem.
