I have inherited a bunch of Emulex HBA's and and an EMC DS-16B2 with all the fiber connectors I could want....

With no experience whatsoever in this technology, I have the concept that I would like to build a Storage Area Network with these - or would it be Network Attached Storage???

The basic idea is to convert an existing Dell Server into a storage server with reasonably high performance SCSI RAID drives and, using the HBA's, connect to the other servers (All Dell) on the network and give them access to the storage.

Anyone done anything like that? Or is the concept basically flawed?

Thanks for any input

Interesting , If the switch and HBA's allow you configure IP addresses. You could use it as a private IP network to share disks.

Never done it, but may be do-able.
