Hi,

Already running sps2003 with sql2000 as backend, so 2 servers there.

After running it for about 1 yr, plenty of users feedback received, since existing portal layout not easy to adapt to all new requirements, I'm thinking about building a new portal layout.

Since I don't have new h/w resources, wondering if I can build the new portal on existing infrastructure, so that when accessing will display the old portal, while accessing will display the new portal? Then after settle down, I can remove all old portal relatd files from server.

Please feel free to comments. Many thanks!

Hello,

There are different way that you can do this. One you could setup a new name in your DNS and point it the your sharepoint server and then use hostheaders in the IIS to 'direct' you to the new portal. Or you can create a new virtual website in the IIS and use a unique port number.

Cheers,
Thomas

Hello again,

Just to mention. You can only have one 'physical' sharepoint portal server installation in one environment.
(One 'physical' installation of sharepoint portal server can host up to 15 portals.)

So if you create a new portal in an existing sharepoint portal installation, some of the files that will be 'shared' with the portal (like certain xml files, template files etc). It all depends on what you want to do with your new portal, if you are going to do a lot of customization to sitedefinitions and templates etc.

Cheers,
Thomas
