Bug? Range function?

Sorry for the vague subject line, I have never seen this problem before.

Whenever I click in a cell in Excel, wherever I drag the mouse it highlights all the cells I've visited. On each cell it will say something like 12R x 3C - rows and columns.
I don't want this, it's driving me nuts. I cannot click away to cancel it, Alt-F, anything, all I can do is close it down.
I have reinstalled twice - any suggestions gratefully received

Sounds like you might have a stuck keyboard key (Shift). Do you have any problems with any other apps?

Are you sure you don't have EXTEND (F8) turned on. That could be canceled by hiting F8 or ESC.

That would turn off when you restart Excel.

there are no problems with any other apps, it's the darndest thing.
Pressing ESC or F8 nothing works - I have just tried it again and it is resolved, now works fine! I have no idea what happened but I am very relieved!Thanks for your input guys
