Buffer Latch problem

Trying to find a resolution for this. Any help would be appreciated. A couple SQL DBA's have been no help so far. this is from the app log on the Macola SQL server. It eventually will crash the server.

Time-out occurred while waiting for buffer latch type 3 for page....

this information precedes the error -

A time-out occurred while waiting for buffer latch -- type 3, bp 03CD24B8, page 1:1238, stat 0xc0410f, database id: 4, allocation unit Id: 72057594047496192, task 0x008DC5C8 : 0, waittime 300, flags 0x80021, owning task 0x04068118. Not continuing to wait.

Which version of SQL. Guessing SQL 2000sp4 ?
