I'm adding a new CAS system from Avotus. I need to install a buffer box. Currently I'm using CAS for Windows from AT&T. It pulls the data from the switch to a data module to the PC. The new Avotus system uses a buffer box, then dumps it to the PC through a serial port.

My question is how do I configure the switch to "dump" the data to the serial port?

That all depends on what the switch is and how the software works. I'm using some old Telemate software and I've told my Definity it's running to a printer so it's just happily pushing data out, the software interprets into a database.

If you already have an application set up it is getting its data from the serial port on the switch. If you need to use a buffer box (which I wouldn't think you really need) thats where you connect to.

The frequency and timing for polling (asking for the data to be transferred) will be set-up in your CA software with a recurring schedule. The buffer box will hold all the call details in memory until polled. It then pushes the data through to your CA software and begins logging call details again.

Most of the time the buffer will hold enough calls for several days of call records.
It is best to have your call accounting software pack set to poll each AM at around 2 to 3 AM when traffic should be low and can complete polling procedures prior to start of new business day.
If your buffer holds say, 10,000 call records and you are averaging around 4,000 calls per day, you should be able to even skip a day of polling and not permanently loose any records
Hope this helps. Jerry Pannell
