A customer of mine asks me to convert data from btrive format to Access.
I have a problem importing data from .dat files.
I used butil to generate txt files and then I use these files to import in Access.
The problem is that I cannot find any value for invoices.
They seems to be encrypted. I have not the owner name of the files because the person who develop the previous application is dead!! And no DDF files are present!!

Can anyone help me??

Thx in advance!!

If you got data out of the Btrieve file using BUTIL, it's not encrypted. The issue is that Btrieve does not store any field information other than the indexes in the data file. BUTIL doesn't know and can't determine the structure of the file and as such writes a byte image of the record. String data is seen correctly but numeric (integer, long, single, double, decimal, date, etc) all show up as the bytes of that value. Without knowing the structure, you're options are going to be limited. You might be able to use a third party tool to create DDFs.

If you need to create DDF files for your existing Btrieve files you might take a look at BtSearch at Once you have created the DDF files it also allows you to export to dbase or ascii formats. And BtSearch takes care of all the binary conversions so you can see all of your data.
