I've just installed RedHat 7 but I can't get my modem to work. I think it has detected it OK (although I don't know which device it is - how can I find out ?) but the initialisation seems to fail. Running the modem query utility produces no results (all answers are blank). What do I need to do to get my modem working ? As you've probably guessed I'm a bit of a newbie, so lots of hand-holding would be appreciated. Thanks.

BT Speedway ISDN modem

Firstly I think you are trying to install your ISDN modem as a "standard" modem.
Hopefully the following should work.....
1. Start isdn-config (either from the menu (programs/system/isdn-config) or as root from an Xterm (> isdn-config &)
2. Click the hardware tab. Aparently BT's speedway is an AVM (Fritz) type card that's basically had a new sticker put om it. You'll have to check whether it's PCI card or not, it most likely is. So choose the appropriate AVM (fritz) card from the dropdown list. Also nake sure Euro ISDN is selected.
3. Click on the provider tab. Fill in the details of your ISP. If your not sure what some of the options mean post again, although most are pretty intuitive.
4. Click apply
5. Click on the dial tab click start, highlight your provider and press dial and hopefully you will be connected

Thanks for that Scott, it seems to work. Another question though - how do I get it to automatically dial (or at least prompt the user) whenever a user requires internet access. The only way I can see is via isdn-config which requires the root password ?
