A little history of the machine
Windows XP Pro SP3
NVidia 8400 GS video card
It would BSOD from time to time, typically with
BugCheck 1000007E, {c0000005, e0b98708, f6572c40, f657293c}
Probably caused by : ntkrnlmp.exe ( nt!PsReturnPoolQuota+17 )
Usually, but not always when using iPlayer or if Google Earth was left running when it went into screen saver. IE8 would also slow to a crawl on occasions.
A few months ago I tried updating the screen drivers with the latest available from NVidia - but that always resulted in getting only 4 bit colour! Totally removing the screen drivers and loading either from the original Nvidia CDROM or the latest available also always failed as well with the 4bit colour only available. Each time before working on the machine I did an image backup and each time returned it after restoring the image.
A week or so ago another attempt to fix the issue was scheduled and I downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers. About a month went by and then the user found a time slot. The user was not that bothered initially as the BSOD's were less than monthly - but recently they had been happening more than once a day.
I had been researching the issue and decided to try Driver Cleaner Pro Professional edition 1.5 build 14. This is my log of what happened next.
Take image backup to USB drive using shadow protect bootable CD
Normal boot
Removed Drivers from add/remove programs.
Booted to safe mode
Ran Driver Cleaner Pro Profession edition 1.5 build 14 and removed Nvidia
rebooted (again to safe mode)
Installed Nvidia drivers from package 258.96_desktop_winxp_32bit_international_whql.exe that was downloaded a few weeks ago
Normal boot
Still 4 bit colour only.
Uninstalled drivers again.
Ignored warnings to re-boot and re-ran 258.96_desktop_winxp_32bit_international_whql.exe
rebooted normally
Got 32bit colour but with windows drivers! (bit weird)
Windows constantly whinged it needed drivers & video card was marked with a yellow ? in device manager.
I don't know why - but I suddently thought - let's check for a newer driver.
Downloaded and Installed from NVidia Driver package 270.61-desktop-winxp-32bit-international-whql.exe
Totally new install routine, it offered a "clean install" option, which I used.
This install worked back to 32 bit colour and correct display size. Bench tested and no BSODs so returned to user. I hope never to hear of this issue again!
Lessons learned.
Always check on the day for new drivers!
Driver release date 04/07/2011 version 6.14.12.7061 seems to be a good version to use.
As for Nvidia - What can I say, there was obviously some issue that came to light after some windows XP update or other that they have finally fixed. Thank goodness.
So, in case any one else is having issues that may be Nvidia related - go check out the latest driver packages.
I hope this helps someone to avoid the frustrations and time wasting I have been through.
