BSOD when reading some CDs

Hi,

I always get a BSOD whenever I try to read some data CDs in a Compaq nx9600 laptop. The problem shows up after doing this:

1. I insert the CD and wait for autoplay to read the contents.
2. I select "Open the folder to view files".
3. I open the folder view.
4. I browse some contents in the CD and then browse the contents on the hard drive.
5. I get the BSOD with this relevant info: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL the hex code is Ox000000D1 (0x7C84511E, Ox00000002, 0x00000008, 0x7C84511E). (no more info about the faulty driver/hardware).

It seems to me it is a driver problem, but I haven't changed any configuration and/or installed new drivers. I downloaded the firmware upgrade from HP website but it didn't work... I've already flashed the new BIOS version too. .. is it possible that something like Roxio/DLA is giving trouble?

Do you get the same error if you try the above routine from Safe Mode?

Or if you isolate some of the other software you are running at Start Up?

Is the fault apparent if a different user is logged on?

Here is a long thread that covers a whole lot of information about that error and is sprinkled with various solutions to try.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error

Thanks Linney. I'll read the thread and post any outcome.

0x000000D1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

The system attempted to access pageable memory using a kernel process IRQL that was too high. The most typical cause is a bad device driver (one that uses improper addresses). It can also be caused by faulty or mismatched RAM, or a damaged pagefile.

so my suggestion would be to check the RAM first with a program such as MEMTEST86+... go to to download

then uninstall the upper and lower filters of the CD/DVD drive... read: faq602-5358

then update or check for updates to chipset & SATA drivers...

Mmm... something weird is going on here.

Let me tell you what I did:

1. I tested the memory with memtest, memory is OK.
2. I upgraded the chipset and some other drivers posted in HP website.
3. I tried to install Sonic DLA (it is posted in HP website too), just to test if that could solve the problem. It got worst, as Windows couldn't load and a new BSOD showed up (sorry, didn't write down the driver failing).
4. Ran system restore to get sonic dla uninstalled.
5. Tried to run MS guided help but it won't run.
6. I've noticed that the laptop has Sonic Easy Creator and Roxio Creator installed. Maybe the two programs are conflicting each other.
7. I've also noticed, after running msconfig, that drgtodsc.exe is a startup item. It is also loaded during startup even in safe mode (the problem shows up in safe mode too).

So... what do you think? Uninstall Sonic? Uninstall Roxio? Disable Drgtodsc in the startup?

Drgtodsc would my favorite as a cause of problems from that list. Start with that and see if it makes a difference.

See if you can work out what drivers the program is loading.

Have a look at the ListSvc command in the Recovery Console, and then the Disable and Enable commands.

I am not sure but I do believe that Sonic Easy Creator is based upon Roxio...

some info:

DrgToDsc.exe file information

The process Drag To Disc Application belongs to the software Drag-to-Disc or Easy CD & DVD Creator or Roxio Easy Media Creator or Roxio Drag-to-Disc by Roxio or Sonic Solutions.

have you cleaned out the upper and lower filters? Roxio can mess these up quite a bit and you will be getting BSOD's...

Many thanks Linney and BadBigBen for your replies.

Linney: I disabled drgtodisc using msconfig, but it didn't make a difference. I would use the recovery console as my very last resource, as I would have to change the admin password (I don't know it, I can't ask for it as the user will be unreachable for some time, and the user may get angry if I change it. Right now I'm using a user account with admin rights).

BadBigBen: I couldn't clean the upper and lower filters. The registry denies me the operation, although I have the appropiate rights...

It seems it is finally fixed.

As posted before, I disabled drgtodsc, but it dind't make a difference. Today, I disabled Windows CD desktop CD recording (if I'm right, it's the IMAPI CD-Burning service) and it seems it's finally fixed!

I'll continue doing some tests, but now I can have some peace of mind... thanks linney and bigbadben.

Not sure what you mean by "Windows CD desktop CD recording", that being a phrase not seen often, if at all. Can you clarify your fix, are you saying you disabled the "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service" in Services?

Roxio has a known tracklist of messing up CD/DVD recordings in the past...

and as Linney mentioned that phrase is a bit off, but I get what you where trying to say... The IMAPI-CD-Burn-COM-Service which controls on the fly burning within XP... and yes this can interfere with Roxio/Sonic or any other burn software, which does not turn it off...

on my PC's it is turned off always, basically because I do not use it, and when I do need to create a Data-DVD/CD, I use Nero to do it (it's a lot cleaner that way)...

but I digress, glad that you got it fixed...

Sorry if I confused you...

It's pretty much the same, I think. As posted by BadBigBen, I disabled on the fly burning within XP (right-clicking the CD/DVD RW and then going to Properties), and I had a look at the services, just to see which service was related to it (it is the IMAPI-CD-Burn-COM-Service).
