Im trying to make a lake that embedded in a mountain. I do i make a lake that is above the ground plane?

make a terain to fit the lake and make it water...

Another option is to use a cube or cylinder that you resize and place in your mountain hole... texture it as water (surface or volume), and you won't have the problem of the infinite water plane. (i used this technique for a multi-leveled fountain)
