Browsing the network not all workstations are there.

I have had some problems with my DNS server that is my router. I have 1 novell server, 1 new PDC that I upgraded from the workgroup, that is a W2K, 2 W2K servers on workgroup, and several linux servers, about 30 workstations
NT, W2K, 98,

Problem is when I look in My network Places only about half the comptuer are seen in the workgroup, all are O.K in the PDC only 3 joined so far. all O.K in Linux, is this part of DNS or part of Master Browser?

Can you give some more info about your environment that might help with this issue.

1. Are you using Windows DNS?
2. Are you using WINS?
3. Are you using Windows AD domains?
4. What computer is having browsing trouble?
5. Is this computer in the domain or workgroup?
6. Is this a Win2k computer or a win98 computer?
7. are these computers all on the same network segment or on different sides of a router?
8. Are the Win98 computers runing AD services (available from Microsoft for free)

With these answers I bet there will be some good suggestions from the BB readers.

Babbs continued,

1. We are using w2k sever for w/ sp3 on it. This server was promoted to a PDC
2. We are using DNS on the PDC also a VPN router.
3. We are using Active directories
4. We have about 30 computers with only about 3 have joined the PDC
5. These computers are all on the workgroup not the PDC
6. These are win 2K computers w/ a couple of nt4 also
7. All but three are in the same segment, the three that are on a diff. segment seem to be OK
8. We have no win 98 we have XP Pro all on a diff. Segment 4 of them. Going across a VPN.

This may shed some more light on the subject. It sounds like you may have been using WINS before you upgraded your PDC to support the older systems, is this so?

You may want to do one or both of the following help the issue. Setup WINS on a server to support your non-win2k windows PCs, Check the network settings of your older clients and turn on "use DNS for WINS resolution"

Also, is there any reason that you are not removing the systems from "workgroup" and joining them to the Windows domain?

You may also want to setup WINS-R on your DNS server to help your Linux clients find your older Windows computers that are not "self-registering" in DNS.

Oh yes, and, of course, make sure your Win2k client's network settings are setup to "register in DNS"

You also may want to setup you PDC as a browse master if this is not already the case.
