Hey all,

I have a small office with a Windows 2000 server as the only AD/Domain server, and up to a couple of weeks ago, everything was working just fine. Now, however, I cannot see any computer members of the domain in "My Network Places" from any client PC, and a net view from any client PC produces error 51. At the same time, the client PC can still connect to any network shares directly by using the UNC, but cannot browse shares in the domain. Also, all PCs can ping the domain server and connect to the domain server's network share.

A Net View on the domain server produces the appropriate list of the 30-something computers we have, but a "browstat status" produces the following output:

Status for domain BLAH on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{25B7F5F1-3016-41FC-A932
-EE36C0DC30F2}
Browsing is NOT active on domain. Status : 6118
Master browser name is held by: MYSERVER
Master browser is running build 2195

Status for domain BLAH on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{DFDE79AD-CF44-42AF-A9B0
-E74E26900507}
Browsing is NOT active on domain. Status : 6118
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.

Here are the things I have verified so far:
On the Win 2000 domain server:
1) The Computer browser service is running
2) The Win 2000 server has both DNS and WINS enabled, pointing to itself as the primary DNS server.
3) NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled
4) File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks is enabled
5) Server has full network connectivity to all client PCs

On the Windows XP client PC:
1) PC is pointing to the correct address for the Win2000 server as DNS and WINS server
2) NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled
3) Computer has a valid domain account
4) Domain user logon is a valid domain account (and is not locked)

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked the binding order on your NICs?

My research on this error indicates that it is fairly common with a DC that is multihomed. Do you have any additional NICs in the server that are not being used? If so disable them.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Actually, the server is not multi-homed. There is another adapter, but it is disabled.

And the binding order or protocols?

I hope you find this post helpful.
