Dell laptop came with Norton (Symantec) Security Suite installed. Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox worked fine.

Suite subscription expired after the year I originally paid for and I choose not to renew. I uninstalled ALL Norton components from the laptop. Did not have it turn the Windows firewall back on. I checked.

Neither IE nor Firefox will connect to any website now. I have told IE to "automatically detect settings" but that does not help. I have tried adding a firewall (Zonealarms) to see what happens. It asks for access to the trusted zone but never asks for access to the Internet. Same for both IE and Firefox. I can see that there is an Internet connection on the wireless connection.

Thanks for suggestions

Click Start > Run.

Type "regedit" in the Run box, click OK.

Locate the following keys in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesDHCP
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesNetBT

For each of the above, double-click the item DependOnService.

Delete any references to SYMTDI or NISDRV.

Click File and Exit to save the changes and close the Registry Editor.

Reboot.
