Hello, I seem to have a problem with a machine using Win2000. The connection is fine for the majority of its users, however there are 3 specific users that can not use the internet on this machine. It appears that the browser can not find the proxy, or hangs at this stage. I can ping external web sites, and the routers, servers and everything else in our LAN. Also, the browser will not open intranet pages.

This machine is on a virtual directory, and of course connects through a proxy server.

I have no clue where to start with this. Any ideas?

Are all these user with the problem administrators on the machine?

Are the users for which all is working admins?

No, sorry I was going to include that in my last reply. I am the only admin, no others.

So all the other users have the same account type and rights?
Have you run a Virus scan or malware scan on these users profiles?

Yes all others have the same rights, they are in the same policy. Our virus scans are run daily and no malicious code was found on the local machines or the servers. No additional programs were downloaded, nothing changed with the machine. At least not that I know of.

1. If any of the three users logon at a different machine, does it work?
2. Are the proxy settings being made through Group Policy, or otherwise?
3. Are the profiles stored locally on the machine, or do they roam?

Yes each user can logon to a different machine with no problems. The proxy settings are setup in the browser and the profiles are roaming. The only thing I have done to the machine was IE SP1 about a month ago. I am not sure if this is when we started having the problem. I do know that the patch was pushed out at night but failed to install correctly. We had to go and update the machines individualy. But this happened to all machines.

There are sporadic complaints of proxy setting issues through Internet Options.

All the values are held in this key: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

'ProxyServer' set to the proxy server and port combination.
If your proxy server is called \MYPROXYSERVER and its running on port 80 then the setting would equal 'MYPROXYSERVER:80'

'ProxyEnable' set to '1' for proxy enabled or '0' for disabled.

'ProxyOverride' set to '<local>' will stop internal addresses from going through the proxy.

Since it is an HKEY_CURRENT_USER key you would have to push a manual entry through logon scripts or Group Policy at each user logon.

You could simply export the key from a working machine, and use regedit /s exported_key.reg in the logon script.

This should gaurantee the setting is as you want.
I have no explanation why this fails to work at times, but there have been several reports in the Forum that it does not 'stick' reliably for all users.

This workaround should sort the issue.
