I'm writing a document at work explaining certain features of the need some clarification that what I'm saying is right.

Does the webserver process any HTML or does the browser do it all. I'm thinking specifically of images. Does the server look through the HTML and send the pictures or does the browser request an image after it receives the HTML file?

I think it is the latter ie. the browser processes all the HTML and makes subsequent requests for images etc. But if someone could confirm that it would be great.

Thanks

The server provides the document that is requested, then the browser renders the html in that document (hence all the browser incompatabilities). Servers processes any kind of server-side scripting like ASP, php, coldFusion, cgi, jsp, etc. The server-side stuff just creates HTML on the fly to be rendered by the browser.
