browse hard drive files

I've got an upload page on my website and I'd like the user to be able to browse the files on their hard drive and select one and have it show up in my edit window.

right now they have to manually type the file directory and everything in and it's horrible.

To get a little more specific, how can I make it be a jpg, gif file or bmp file?
