We have a Brother HL 1850 that has been nothing but trouble -- we have had it for 10 months and has been replaced once and in for major service another time. Now over the weekend a small piece of glass -- about 8 inches by a half inch -- broke off inside. What IS this, anyway? It is under warranty, so we will send it off again for repair, but this is too strange. Anyone have recommendations for another printer in the same price range that will be more reliable?

Looks to me like the price range is around $500. If that is the case go with an HP 2200 or 2300. HP printers have never given me any real issues. I have about 45 of them throughout my building and except for an occasional cleaning there has been no problems Even if that is too much just go with a small one, HPs dependability will still be there

Hard to tell what your piece of glass is, possibly a cover for a led array or mirror.

I'll concur on the HP printers, not really fond of the 1xxx printers, but most others give very few problems and are very easy to service. Seem to last forever, and on that note, if you're willing to take a bit of a chance there are always several good used units -- either off lease or from bankruptcies -- available on eBay in the higher level. Look for a seller with good feedback and read all of the fine print. I've bought several HP laserjet 5's (which is probably the most solid printer ever built in the range) and 8000's that way with minimal problems. Again, it's always a gamble, I've had good luck, but it's your buck.

Another good option would be the Oki lasers. Generally well built (not quite as solid as the HP) and software compatible. You can generally get a few more options for the same price. Parts are readily avaible and the machines are built to be serviced.

What ever you do, stay away from Brother printers in the future. You've actually been lucky. Generally see software/driver problems, and servicing is a problem. Doubt you could get someone to service out of warranty for a reasonable price. Generally built to be used for a while then landfilled.

A note from the supply side of the old HP printers ... we are obsoleting our HP LJ 1100, 5L and 6L printers. Why? No reason ... they are being removed working and replaced with HP LJ 1200 and 1300 printers. Somebody out there in the used buying chain is going to end up with pallet after pallet of 1100, 5L and 6L printers. Perhaps you will be one of the lucky people on the end of this chain.

We are also getting rid of our HP LJ 5 printers, for the same non-reason. I'm struggling to keep our main network printers (HP LJ 4000 series) afloat. The funny thing is, some of our 5 series printers are younger (acquisition-wise) than the 4000 series. But my corporate printer ninja has decided to not support them anymore, so off they go.

Go on eBay and take advantage of the corporate upgrade culture.

if paper feeds straight in hp 5 and 6 printers, I would expect at least some unhappy users of the 1200/1300 printers. I sometimes have trouble with the paper skewing as it feeds into the printer and sometimes I get pretty slanty lines on my checks.

Thanks, everyone. I already have an HP 1200, 2200, 4050 and 5, all of which work well. Not sure what "inspired" me to try a Brother, although it was well-rated online --probably got a good price that day. I just never expected to pull broken glass out of a printer.....Peahippo -- if you'd like a tax deduction for some of those printers, contact me! We're a not-for-profit and your company could claim a tax deduction for a donation...... <smile> PRosenberg@indplsartcenter.org
