I use Windows 98/SE at home. The PC has 128M ram installed. I have many WP programs, graphics, internet & other things installed. I also have a utility that shows
how much free ram is available. If I boot the PC, it reports about 84M free. If I then load a program, naturally, it uses some memory, but if I then close it, I would expect that amount of ram to be free. It's not. There is about 3-4M less. What happens over time is that after using the machine for a few hours, I may only have about 10M of ram available and all the programs are closed! It requires a reboot, which is a pain.
If I don't reboot, it eventually crashes. This happened last nite while in the middle of a project and really pissed me off. Something has to be done. I considered adding more
ram, but that's just a bandaid, as it will not "fix" the problem, only prolong it. I'm tempted to erase the entire PC and install WIN 2000 PRO, hoping that it will NOT exhibit these behaviors. Anyone have any explanations, cures or suggestions?
