I use 9 & I selected OSX from my start up disk and restarted only to get a grey screen with what appears to be a broken folder icon. I can't do anything. In a desperate attempt I tried rebuilding the desktop - nothing. I am unable to open my disc drive to re-install the software. What does this icon mean - and what should I do?

Broken folder icons indicate a flaky or non-existent system folder.

Your only option at this point is to boot from your system install CD to refresh your operating system or to run disk utilities.

Opening your 'disc drive' is critical. Does the paperclip not work?

booted up with os 9 and used to disc utilities and everything is ok with the hard drive, switched back
from os 10 to os 9 boot up and everyting worked fine.

i guess there must be some truth, because i don't use
os 10 and a tech at apple claims that if you don't use
os 10 for a period of time it will eventually become
corrupt and I have to agree? This is the second time
os 10 has become corrupt since owning the machine for
about 1.5 years.

Booting to both systems is a risky idea and this is why Apple no longer makes Macs that can boot into OS9.

While in OS9, the user can knowingly or accidentally view/modify/delete OSX system files. These system files are not visible to the average user when booting into OSX. It is possible that this caused your OSX system error.

If you have the ability, avoid booting into OS9 and run Classic from within OSX.
