Hello all,

Another question regarding Cisco 1720s and frame relay. My question is what exactly is the "broadcast" option used for in the frame-relay map command? Ex:

frame-relay map ip 192.168.200.2 18 broadcast

The IOS Command Summary I have (old, IOS 11.3) says it's to broadcast OSPF routes. I'm using strictly static routes, yet me telco says I'd better add that broadcast option, or else problems. They can't tell me exactly what it's for though. If I don't *need* it, and will create unnecessary chatter on the wire, I sure don't want it.

Thanks again for your collective wisdom!

I work for a Telephone company, and I never use this command. LMI when active will produce enough traffic on the span. J.Fisher CCNA

From what I've read ( like others.. never had to use it) it refers to the fact that frame relay is a "non broadcast" connection and certain protocols like OSPF would have troubles since they rely on broadcasts ( technically multicasts). Normally, frame is a point to point via a logical circuit but the case is made when you have a multi-point connection that you might need to map the circuit ( hub and spoke arrangement) since inverse ARP can not get the IP on the 2nd spoke.. only the hub. There is a paper at Cisco's site but I dont have the URL handy and I read it AM and did not copy it down. If you want, I can post it tomorrow since I have it marked.

If someone has a clearer way of saying this, please do so..
