Can server 'error' messages be stopped from being sent to all users?

I did research previous posts and I understand that broadcast messages can be turned off from the client, however this will also turn off "all" broadcast messages. Which I would prefer not to do.

What I would like to do is to only turn off server error messages and I was just wondering if this was addressed in 6.5 in any way?

I would recommend disabling all server messages - it's annoying when EVERYBODY in your company gets one and it makes the problem EXTREMELY visible - something you don't want or need. Pretty soon (if this happens a lot), you'll start to hear stuff like "Why does Novell have to send out all these notifications / Windows doesn't have that problem" and other useless rhetoric.

Instead, setup Notifications for critical items such as Abends, Low Disk space, etc.

To turn off broadcasts, do this: Set Disable Broadcast Notifications Process=on (This will still allow you to send out messages if you want or need to)

To turn on Notifications, go into the portal ( DIAGNOSE SERVER / HEALTH MONITOR. In there you see a list of things you can notify on. The useful ones are "ABENDED THREAD COUNT" and "LOW DISK SPACE" and "AVAILABLE MEMORY".. Put a tick in the Notify column for each item you want to be notified of. Be careful on some because they could cause a lot of notifications for trivial items.

At the top of the Notification items you'll see a "Mail Notification Configuration" link. Go in there and put in your mail server and the addresses you want notifications to go to. This could be your Cell Phone, Email address, whatever.. You don't need GroupWise running on the server - the Portal has a built in mini-SMTP server that sends the messages out via SMTP protocol to whatever IP address you define for your mail server. You may have to configure your mail server seperately to accept relays from your NetWare server depending on your configuration.

Marvin, your take on the morale-hurting "feature" of advertising problems is dead on. I did just what you advised to all my Netware boxes.

Yep, me too. Interesting thing is, even after "Set Disable Broadcast Notifications Process=on" the servers still send the messages to me, and only me (not even to other admins who also are trustees of [root]).

Thanks Marv. I was on vacation when Novell kicked out some non-critical messages (Backup Exec NSS pool error). You can guess what happened next.
