Hello,
I've been reading about VPNs for the last two days, and understand the basic concepts/theory, but haven't seen any example directly relating to my situation.

I have dsl at work and cable at home.
Both have basic 4-port linksys routers.

I can turn on RRAS on a server, but it turns off the internet (which i don't care at this point. i see there are plenty posts to solve that problem).

How do i configure my winxp pro machine at home? do i have use dial-up?

What port are these services running at by default? I suppose i have to forward the port requests on the routers for the connections.

If there are good websites, i'll do the reading. Otherwise, any posts would be really helpful.
PS. Once i figure out how to do this, i'm posting it to my website, so others may get some help.

okay, i've learned a couple things thanks to some great friends.

First, the port to forward on the recieving end is 1723. This is pptp port.

Second, when setting up new network connection in 2k/xp client, it ask you to install a dial-up adapter. Just put in your area code and press okay. If you don't (even if you don't have a modem), it won't let you select the vpn option later. I know, it doesn't make sense.

Third, on the win2k server, after you configure RRAS (make sure that you select a block of IPs that no other computers are using!!!!), you have to allow dial-in access in the user properties. It's denied by default.

I successfully dialed into work from home!! But when i try to ping the work computers, it says timeout. I tried adding myself to the work domain, but it says network path not found.

What is a typical LAN IP setting? From my limited knowledge, i think that might the problem.

lan 1
(client *unique IP in both LANs) 192.168.1.11 ---(gateway/router) 192.168.1.1 --****internet******-----(gateway/router) 192.168.1.1 -- (RRAS server) 192.168.98 *unique IP in both LANs

Do I need to change the IPs on one of my routers so all IPs are unique?

Wow, this site is awesome. After reading through this site for just about 5 hours. I found out how to do it.
My error:
Using the same network address on both LANs. You must have 192.168.2.x on one and 192.168.1.x on the other (for example).

I'm going to post a howto on our website. when it's ready, I'll let everyone know.

By the way, the FAQ section is really, really underrated.
I could have figured it out 2 hours sooner if I had gone there. But hey, live and learn!

Peace,
-Micky
