Broadband filters still getting noise on line

recentley when i have used the standard Eircom broadband filter,
"the white box with the 2 ports" i am getting a lot of white noise on the analog port.
i can only hear it on my end, and the caller does not..

Does it happen when the broadband router is unpluged?

This could be dodgy internal wiring, but could also be a dodgy master socket.

It depends on the type of noise and the equipment connected to it. These days people associate noise on a line with DSL filters not working but the line may simply be out of balance. Try investigating line balancing coils, not cheap but possibly cheaper than replacing equipment!

i am in Ireland, and i tried it with 2 different DSL filters.
when the router is not plugged in i dont get the noise.

also what is line balancing?

so it sounds like a router issue rather than a dsl filter issue. have your tried a different router?

When the two legs of the line are of differen't lengths, any noise induced on them is out of phase with each other and the noise is apparent. Line balancing coils are used to "balance both legs so that the noise induced in one leg cancels out the same noise in the other leg giving a quiet line!

Are you sure that you have the DSL filter wired correctly, and is it good?

I should add that most modern line interfaces such as the one in the DSL modem have a balancing circuit, but on occasion that circuit can fail without degrading the operation of the equipment (other than the line goes noisy). It is possible the exchange end is the one that needs balancing and the problem only shows up when the line is under load by the DSL modems. Talk to your carrier!
