hi, I'm running redhat 7.3 on my hp laptop. When it starts eth0 fails to come up. However after it starts I can run
`ifconfig eth0 169.254.51.1` and it will work. I just use the first three numbers off another machine on my network. Is this a problem with dhcp? Please help.

169.254.51.1 looks like an APIPA address to me.
Do you have a DHCP server on your network ?
What happens if you assign a static IP address to the interface

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

IPADDR=x.x.x.x
NETMASK=y.y.y.y
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=static --------------------------------------------------------------------

How can I believe in God when just last week I got my tongue caught in the roller of an electric typewriter?
