What's so great about the new version? I'm using Arcserve 2000 right now and it runs pretty solid.. Anyone using it? Is it worth upgrading too??

Any comment articles on it?

Plan on doing the upgrade prior to the next server OS, database, or e-mail upgrade. Get the new version of ARCserve installed, setup and tested and then do the other upgrade.

We upgraded from ARCserve 2000 to ARCserve 9 just mainly because of better brick level support.

However, Backup of Exchange IS does not work satisfying and CA has no clue yet as to why it does not. It will back up some 16GB and then tell me it is finished, which it is not. Transaction files are not deleted and I know that i should be some 24GB instead.

That's the kind of info I was looking for.. I figured it was still full of bugs.. I'll be waiting a while..

Good luck with that..

Hi snootalope,

You should judge about Arcserve 9.0 from Knutern experiense
maybe they a problem specific to their enviromenet.

Knutern didn't give enougth information to know exactly what type of problem he is facing.we need to know the more info,Arcserve 9.0 is more stable compering to the old version and I like it .

Hi mohamdr & snootalope,

well mohamdr, you (and many others) have tried to help me - and that i am very thankfull for - a lot (Abnormal Exchange IS and Brick Level Backup, thread478-627984 is one of my threads). And because i still experience this problem, I have opened a call with CA. It has been open since Tuesday, August 12th 2003. Still no solution in sight.

In addition to this call, I was forced to open a new one regarding the performance of my brick level backup. Currently it is doing some 16MB/min, but i also had 5MB/Min etc. Unsolved too.

I am talking about ARCserve Version 9.01 with Patch 3 running on Windows 2000 Advanced Server (English), SP4. Exhcange Server Enterprise Ed. 2000 with Service Pack 3.

Hi Knutern,
regards the issue with backing up some 16GB and then tell me it is finished, which it is not. Transaction files are not deleted and I know that i should be some 24GB instead

1-Try to do a count job by selecting exchange IS and check what the size of data it display.
you can find it in Manager-->Utilites-->count

2-Are there any errors in Activity logs

3-Put the IS in Debug mode and see it gives any errors
to put the aqgent in debug mode cehck exchnage Agent documenation either on the CD or in support site.

regards transaction files are not deleted
What type of backup you are doing full backup or incremental. if you are doing incrematal circular logging has to be disabled.

regards Brick level slowiness
1-What type of antivirus you are using?
2-try to disable it for sometime just to check is it becuase of antivirus or not.

3-in future configure your antivirus to scan only incoming not execlude outgoing and see if it help

regards,
mohamdr

Hello Mohamdr,

i really appreciate your assistance. If only every IT guy out there would be like you!

About your points:
1) My only successful IS Backup was 24 GB of information. Your tip about count job will not provide me with the possibility of counting Exchange Objects???

2) no obvious errors

3) I did a "Advanced Debug" yesterday which i sent CA.

We always do full backup and circular logging is not activated. BTW: Incremental Backup of neither IS nor brick level works. It will always do a full backup (selected through Backup Agent Option upon right-clicking First Storage Group).

Regarding the slow bricklevel performance, I did shut of our Symantec AntiVirus/Filtering-Service just to test. No improvement in terms of speed. I clocked it to 12.6MB/min while the antivirus for exchange was stopped.

Anyone come find a resolution on this yet, I have the same slow throughput on brick level backups. 15 to 20 mb a minute. Thanks

I'm currently tweaking here & there with a CA support engineer, and as soon as thing are working more than twice in a row, i will post the results here.

My backup problems with Information seems to work now, although what I have done so far can not be responsible for that, according to the CA support engineer.

Cheers
Knuter

Did you try to change the number of block in Exchange Agent - (avail with v9 Exchange Agent). Default is ony 1 block - go up to maximum 16 block.

My server setting can only goes up to max 5 block - and the throughput do not change any more.

You can try it out.

nat.
