Hi I'm new here. I'm having display problems can someone please help me. Ever since I updated to Windows XP my display becomes dark under 1024x768 resolution. 1280x1024 runs perfectly fine though. I have a Radeon 8500 128sdram, with the newest drivers. The only way I can see anything is when I turn the contrast all the way up.

Thank for listening......James

What's the refresh rate set at?

If the refresh rate is set to optimal, then you want to manually set it to something like 75Hz or 85Hz. Try the lower setting first and see if that makes a difference.

Also, what is the monitor 'type' that XP shows?

Hardware specific information would help with the diagnosis.

My refresh rate was set at 60 hz. If I change it to 70hz or higher desktop looks better, but when I play games at 1024x768 it is still to dark to see. Xp says it is a plug and play monitor. The monitor is about four years old, cheap brand:(. It worked perfect when I had windows 98.

do you have brightness/contrast settings on the monitor itself? Most monitors store different colour/brightness/contrast levels for each resolution independently so if you adjust them they shouldnt affect other resolutions.

What OSs did you have before (98) ?
Did the resolution work fine under that?
Have you tried switching monitors?

Many video cards allow you to change the brightness and contrast through the display properties. Also, many games allow you to increase the Gamma (brightness). ~Apex1x
